How to Prime the Oil Pump

time2011/04/26

After an oil change, the low oil pressure light may remain on or the oil pressure gauge may register little or no pressure. This is generally caused by the oil pump losing its prime during an oil change. During an oil change, when the oil is drained from the engine, oil may also be drained from the oil pump or the oil pump pickup tube. When new oil is added, air can become caught in the tube on the suction side of the oil pump. The trapped air causes the oil pump not produce proper oil flow and pressure. All that is needed is to prime the oil pump.

1
Start the engine. Wait 30 seconds. If the oil pressure gauge registers little or no pressure within 30 seconds of when the engine is started, turn off the engine. Remove the oil filter and replace with a new oil filter. Restart the engine. If the oil pressure is normal, you are done. There is no need to prime the oil pump. The cause of the low oil pressure was that the oil filter was blocking the oil flow. However, if the oil pressure gauge still registers low within 30 seconds of the engine starting, you will need to prime the oil pump.

2
Turn off the engine. Remove the oil filter. Fill the oil filter with ? a quart of clean oil. Reinstall the oil filter. Start the engine. Wait 10 seconds. If the oil pressure is normal, the oil pump has been primed. However, if the oil pressure gauge still registers low, turn the engine off.

3
Fill a squirt can with clean oil. Remove the oil filter. Squirt oil into the oil filter's mounting base inlet hole, which is adjacent to the threaded mounting stud. Reinstall the oil filter. The oil pump should be primed.

4
Check the your vehicle's oil level and top-off if the oil is low.
